19th Time Everester Goes Missing In Baruntse Veteran Nepali mountaineer Chewang Nima Sherpa, who is one summit short of equaling the record of most summits on Mt Everest, has gone missing after an avalanche struck his expedition team on the slopes of Barutse (7,129m).
Jeevan Ghimire of Sherpa Shangri-La Treks that organized the expedition said a big avalanche swept Chewang away in windy weather conditions. All other climbers are safe, according to Ghimire. The company sent a rescue chopper to Baruntse on October 24 to know Chewang’s whereabouts. “His teammates dug the snow but couldn’t trace him,” Ghimire said.
Chewang, 44, who has already climbed Mt Everest 19 times, was expected to break the world record of maximum number of Everest summits as he is younger than Apa Sherpa, 50, who has reached the summit 20 times.
